ちりめん本

　こういうことを幸運って言うのだろうと思った一日でした。先日、友人の真知子の紹介でちりめん本を最初に考案し、出版した長谷川竹次郎さん（1853-1938）のひ孫の西宮慶子さんと、慶子さんのお母様であり、３代目西宮雄作さんの奥様の西宮多美子さんとお会いすることが出来、数え切れないほどの作品の数々を見せていただくことが出来たのです。

　まず最初にちりめん本とは何かを説明しなければなりませんね。わたしも伺うことが決まってから、資料を読んで知ったちりめん本。目にしたのはもちろんその日が初めてでした。

　ちりめん本とは、上質な和紙を様々な工程を経て、原紙の８割ほどに圧縮して、まるで縮緬布のような質感を作り出したちりめん紙に、各国語に翻訳された欧文と多色刷りの版画が挿絵として添えられた絵本です。その絵本の大きさは手のひらサイズで、ふんわりとした手触りと温かみが今でも忘れられない、気持ちの良い感触でした。

見せていただいたちりめん本は、その代名詞にもなっているJapanese Fairy Tale Seriesという日本昔話のシリーズです。

「花咲か爺さん」「カチカチ山」「桃太郎」「猿蟹合戦」「分福茶釜」「舌切り雀」などなど。そのシリーズは1885年に刊行され、No.1〜No.20まであり当時とても人気がありたくさん売れたそうです。

　最初は日本の子どもの語学教育のためというのが第一だったそうですが、外国人からの反応が良く、お土産品として重宝されたそう。英語だけでなく、スペイン語、フランス語、ドイツ語、ポルトガル語、オランダ語などに翻訳されています。竹次郎さんはミッションスクールに

通われていたこともあり、多くの宣教師やお雇いの外国人の知り合いがいらしゃって、その彼らに翻訳を依頼することによってこのシリーズを完成させたそうです。日本人ではなく、日本の文化や文学を知る彼らが翻訳をすることによって、少しだけ日本昔話がロマンティックなエ

ンディングになっていたりするところがとっても面白いな〜と思いました。

　そしてこの贅沢な版画の挿絵。日本人であるわたしたちならどういう工程を経て版画が完成するか知っていますが、改めて想像するとその作業の手間とこの本に注ぐ膨大なエネルギーに感動します。その挿絵はいまでも色鮮やかなまま、現在のわたしたちをも楽しませてくれます。

　この挿絵は小林永濯（1843-1890）という江戸時代から明治時代にかけて活躍した日本画家であり、浮世絵師。狩野派で修行をし、西洋の写実を取り入れて和洋の技法が一体となった作品を残しているそうです。今度調べてみよう。

　版画が仕上がるまでの工程は次週お届けしたいと思います。

　この日、わたしたちはたくさんの貴重なものを見せていただけただけでなく、実際に手に取り、写真を撮らせていただけて、こうやって皆様にご紹介することができました。本当にありがとうございます。

　３代目西宮雄作さんが亡くなられた現在、たくさんの印刷物や作品たちが眠っています。この素晴らしい版画たちの存在を今後多くの方々に知っていただけるような形を作りたい、とお話ししてくださった慶子さん。本来外国の方々へ届くはずだったこの美しい作品たちが、それ

に興味を持ってくださる世界中の方々へ届いたらどんなに素敵なことか。考えただけでもワクワクします。わたしも何かお手伝いできたらいいな。

CREPE PAPER BOOKS

My friend, Machiko, introduced me to the family of Takejiro Hasegawa (1853 - 1938), he was the inventor and publisher of the Crepe Paper Book.

I met Keiko Nishinomiya, who is the great grandaughter of him an her mother is the wife of third generation, Yusaku Nishinomiya.

At first I have to explain to you about: ' What is the Crepe Paper Book? ' It is an illustrated book with wood block printed in various colors and writes about famous Japanese stories in some languages on crepe paper. The crepe paper is compressed on high quality japanese handmade paper untill it becomes 80% smaller. These books are palm sized. The sense of touch is soft and warm.... I can't forget the feeling.

The crepe books that were shown to me are about Japanese fairy tale stories. At first these were published for Japanese childhood education of language teaching But the books were more popular as souvenirs for foreigners than education in Japan.

So the books are written in many languages, English, Spanish, French, German and Dutch too..... Takejiro Hasegawa had foreign friends who were missionairies and diplomates from many countries because he was attending the mission school in Tokyo. He ordered them to translate the stories in their languages. Then the series were completed. The intersting thing is that they became a little bit romantic in their endings when being translated.

The illustrations of wood block printing are drawn by Eitaku Kobayashi (1843 - 1890) He was a Japanese style painter and Ukiyoe artist. These colors of illustrations are still vividness and a very generous thing. Because wood block printing is eleborate work of each professional. I will write about the process of wood block printing next week.

We were shown many Crepe Paper Books, other beautiful books and Ukiyoe. We were really lucky that we could see them right before our nose, to touch and even take pictures for this article!

Even after the third generation, Yusaku Hasegawaś death now, there are still countless books in his house. His daughter Keiko told us that she wants to show these beautiful printing works to interested people, in the world. So she is planning how to show them. It is a very interesting thing for me too. I hope the books and printing works will reach many people over the whole world. That is the real purpose when these works were printed....

CRÊPE PAPIER BOEKEN

Mijn vriendin, Machiko, introduceerde mij bij de familie van Takejiro Hasegawa (1853 - 1938), hij was de uitvinder en publicist van de crêpe papier boeken.

Ik ontmoette Keiko Nishinomiya, zij is de achter kleindochter van hem en haar moeder is de derde generatie,Yusaku Nishinomiya.

Eerst wil ik uitleggen wat een crêpe papier boek eigenlijk is. Het is een geïllustreerd boek met houtdruk illustraties in verschillende kleuren. En het handels over oude Japanse verhalen in verschillende talen op crêpe papier. Het Crêpe papier wordt onder hoge druk op Japans handgemaakt papier gemaakt tot het uiteindelijk 80% kleiner is.De boeken hebben dan de grote van een handpalm. Het aanraken van de boeken is warm en zacht... een onvergetelijke gebeurtenis.

De boeken die mij getoond werden handelen over Japanse sprookjes. Zij werden eerst gemaakt voor het onderwijs om vreemde talen te leren. Maar de boeken werden steeds populairder bij buitenlanders als souvenir.

Dus ging men de boeken vertalen in het Engels, Frans, Duits en ook in het Nederlands. Takejira Hasegawa had vele buitenlandse vrienden, die diplomaten of missionaris waren, leren kennen omdat hij bij de missionarissen op school kwam. Hij vroeg hun om de boeken te vertalen in hun eigen taal. Grappig is overigens dat de verhalen ineens met een vleugje romantiek eindigden na de vertaling.

De illustraties werden gemaakt door Eitaku Kobayashi (1843 m- 1890)Hij was een stylistisch schilder en Ukiyoe kunstenaar. De kleuren van de illustraties zijn nog steeds levendig en zijn een genereus geschenk. Omdat houtblok drukken een zeer moeilijk werk is, zelfs voor professionals, ga ik volgende week hier dieper op in.

Men liet ons vele crêpe papieren boeken zien en ook andere zeer mooie boeken van Ukiyoe werk. We hadden echt geluk deze direct voor onze neus te krijgen en ze zelfs te mogen vasthouden. En daarboven mochten we ze ook nog fotograferen voor dit artikel.

Zelfs de derde generatie, na Yusaku Haegawa's dood bevinden er zich talloze werken in zijn huis. Zijn achter kleindochter Keiko vertelde ons dat zij zij deze prachtige kunstwerken aan mensen wil laten zien, over de hele wereld. Daarom werkt zij nu aan het plan om dit ook waar te maken. Het is zeer interessant , ook voor mij, ik hoop dat zij en de boeken veel mensen over de wereld bereiken. Dat is namelijk de essentie van deze crêpe papier boeken en het drukken ervan...
